The Ladykillers (2004)
The Coen brothers‘ film, The Ladykillers (2004), features an unlikely group of characters. When stern and devout widow Mrs. Marva Munson rents a room to Professor Goldthwaite Higginson Dorr, she has no idea he plans to use her root cellar for rehearsals with his early music ensemble. What Mrs. Munson doesn’t realize is that this “ensemble” is actually a gang of criminals. Led by Dorr, the group includes Lump, a not-so-bright football player serving as their muscle; Garth Pancake, an overconfident movie effects technician with IBS; the crude and disheveled Gawain McSam as their inside man; and General, a tough Vietnamese tunneling expert who tries to hide his smoking from Mrs. Munson by keeping his cigarette in his mouth.
A gang of criminals has devised a scheme to access the underground vault of a nearby riverboat casino by digging a tunnel through the exposed wall in the cellar. Under the cover of darkness, they discard the dirt from their excavation into a passing garbage barge. However, their plan is not without obstacles. Gawain, their inside man, loses his job as a janitor at the casino, while an explosive incident results in Garth’s finger being taken by Mrs. Munson’s cat Pickles. To make matters worse, the local sheriff pays them a visit. Despite these setbacks, they successfully breach the vault and take off with the loot. But before they can escape, Mrs. Munson learns of their plan and gives Dorr an ultimatum: return the money and join her at church on Sunday or face legal consequences.
