The Langoliers (1995), a two-part horror miniseries, was both directed and written by Tom Holland. It is based on the novella by Stephen King from the book Four Past Midnight, which consists of four parts. During a red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Boston, most of the passengers and crew disappear after flying through a strange light. Their personal belongings are all that remain. The remaining passengers were asleep during the event and include pilot Brian Engle, deadheading on the flight, an enigmatic Englishman named Nick, schoolteacher Laurel Stevenson, tool and die worker Don Gaffney, violinist Albert Kaussner, troubled teen Bethany Sims, mystery author Bob Jenkins, blind girl Dinah Bellman, sleepy businessman Rudy Warwick, and mentally ill executive Craig Toomy.
After failing to establish communication with air traffic control or other flights, Brian manages to land at Bangor International Airport. The group is surprised to find the airport deserted and without power. Upon further exploration, they notice a strange aura of dullness and lifelessness permeating everything. Even matches fail to ignite, sounds lack echo, and food has lost its flavor. As they try to make sense of their surroundings, Dinah hears an unusual sound in the distance while Bob speculates that they may have passed through an aurora borealis and entered a time rift, sending them back a few minutes. However, Dinah’s telepathic abilities warn them about Craig’s increasing instability and aggression after finding a gun in an airport locker.
