The Last Face (2016)
The American drama film The Last Face (2016), directed by Sean Penn and written by Erin Dignam, features an all-star cast including Charlize Theron, Javier Bardem, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Jean Reno. Despite being selected for competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, the film received poor reviews upon its initial release. After debuting on DirecTV on June 29, 2017, it was later made available through video on demand and in theaters on July 28, 2017 courtesy of Saban Films. Critics were unimpressed with The Last Face; according to The Hollywood Reporter’s scathing review, it is ‘a stunningly self-important but numbingly empty cocktail of romance and insulting refugee porn’. Similarly unimpressed were The Guardian and The Telegraph, with the former remarking that Theron and Bardem’s performances were their worst yet while black characters were relegated to minor roles in the background.
In West Africa, Wren Peterson, a doctor and activist, continues the work of her late father’s organization, Doctors of the World. Despite being content with leading the organization, she often struggles with measuring up to her father’s accomplishments. During her time there in 2003, Wren meets Miguel – an attractive surgeon who shares her dedication to treating those affected by poverty and war. However, their love is cut short when Wren learns of Miguel’s past involvement with her own cousin, causing their relationship to deteriorate.
