The film The Last Song (2010) and the novel it is based on, written by Nicholas Sparks in 2009, both follow the story of 17-year-old Veronica ‘Ronnie’ Miller. After her parents’ divorce three years ago, she became rebellious and was caught shoplifting in New York City where she lives. Despite being a gifted pianist under her father Steve Miller’s guidance, Ronnie hasn’t played piano or spoken to him since. Despite receiving interest from Juilliard School for her talent, Ronnie refuses to attend. In an attempt to reconnect with her family, Kim Miller sends Ronnie and her younger brother Jonah to spend the summer with their father in his hometown of Wrightsville Beach. Steve, a former professor at Juilliard and renowned concert pianist, now leads a quiet life as he works on creating a replacement stained-glass window for the local church which was lost in a recent fire.

Upon her arrival, Ronnie greets everyone with hostility, including the handsome and popular Will Blakelee. During a heated volleyball match, he carelessly collides with her and causes her to spill her shake. Brushing off the encounter, Ronnie crosses paths with Blaze, an outsider who shares a home with her boyfriend Marcus. That evening, while gathered around a beach campfire, Blaze makes advances towards Ronnie, mistaking them for reciprocated interest. Seeking retribution, Blaze plants a bracelet in Ronnie’s purse and gets her arrested for shoplifting. Eventually, while exploring the loggerhead sea turtle nest near her father’s house, Ronnie meets Will once again as he volunteers at an aquarium. As they work together to protect the eggs from pesky raccoons throughout the night, she discovers that there is more to Will than meets the eye and their connection becomes deeper.
