The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), an epic religious drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader with contributions from Scorsese and Jay Cocks, is based on Nikos Kazantzakis’ controversial 1955 novel of the same name. The film depicts Jesus of Nazareth, a carpenter living in the Roman client state of Judea, struggling with conflicting desires and his understanding of God’s plan for him. Judas Iscariot, a friend of Jesus, is tasked with killing him for collaborating with the Romans in crucifying Jewish rebels; however, he begins to believe that Jesus may be the Messiah and urges him to lead a rebellion against the Romans. Despite this, Jesus maintains that his message is one of love for all humanity.
He begins preaching after saving Mary Magdalene from stoning and being baptized by John the Baptist, gathering disciples who have varying motivations – some seeking freedom from the Romans while Jesus emphasizes matters of the spirit. Jesus ventures into the desert to examine his bond with God, where he overcomes temptation from Satan. Upon leaving the desert, Martha and Mary from Bethany aid in restoring Jesus’s well-being, while also urging him to consider marriage and starting a family. Through miraculous acts, such as resurrecting Lazarus, Jesus’s mission reaches Jerusalem. There, he and his disciples expel money changers from the temple. As his hands begin to bleed, Jesus interprets it as a sign that he must sacrifice himself on the cross for the redemption of humanity.
