The Last Time (2006)
The Last Time (2006) is an American independent black comedy following the story of Ted Riker, the top salesman at Bineview’s New York office. He is given the task of training Jamie Bashant, a new and inexperienced salesman who has recently moved to the area with his fiancé, Belisa. Despite Ted’s efforts to assist Jamie in improving his skills, he continues to struggle. When Belisa meets Ted, she is impressed by his success and confident demeanor. They eventually share a passionate night together and make sure to keep their affair a secret from Jamie. As their relationship intensifies, Ted opens up about his past failed love which led him to switch careers from college professor to sales. Belisa tries to console him and later that night, they discover they both have a shared interest in Oscar Wilde’s classic novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Ted’s work neglect has caused a sharp decline in his sales and put the company in a precarious position. However, his growing bond with Belisa, who has promised to leave Jamie and marry him, is helping to heal his bitterness. Despite Belisa’s efforts, Jamie’s performance does not improve and he is ultimately fired. This coincides with Belisa ending their engagement. As Jamie descends into paranoia about Belisa potentially cheating on him, she decides to break up with Ted and move back to Ohio to take care of him. This leaves Ted devastated and he throws himself back into work. His manager is desperate for him to make some sales, but Ted’s spirits are lifted when Belisa confronts him outside his office and reveals that she has decided to stay in New York to be with him.
