The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000)
The American sports film, The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), tells the story of Hardy Greaves, a senior who has experienced his fair share of health issues while playing golf. His late wife used to question why he continued to play ‘a game that seems destined to kill’ him. Despite this, Greaves shares his love for the sport by recounting his childhood hero: Rannulph Junuh. Junuh is the beloved son of Savannah, Georgia, known as a talented golfer from a privileged background. Alongside his stunning girlfriend Adele Invergordon, they appear to have the perfect life. However, after experiencing the horrors of World War I and losing his entire company in battle, Junuh is left broken and turns to alcohol upon returning to Georgia years later.
Though he is awarded the Medal of Honor for his service, he remains haunted by his past trauma. In the midst of the Great Depression (around 1930), Adele is determined to restore her family’s lost fortune. She plans to hold a two-day exhibition match at their golf resort, offering a grand prize of $10,000. To generate local interest, she needs a local participant and Greaves kindly suggests his hero, Junuh. Adele then turns to her estranged lover and asks him to play. While Junuh is attempting to hit golf balls into the darkness of the night, a mysterious traveler carrying a suitcase arrives and introduces himself as Bagger Vance, offering to be his caddie. With Greaves as his assistant caddie, Bagger helps Junuh confront his inner struggles and regain his passion for golf.
