The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004) is an American made-for-television fantasy-adventure film that marks the beginning of the Librarian franchise. The protagonist, Flynn Carsen, has an impressive academic record of 22 degrees and is expelled from college by his professor Harris. However, Harris sets it up for Flynn to obtain his 23rd degree during mid-term. As they admire their miniature version of the great pyramid with a gold capstone, Harris expresses concern about Flynn’s lack of real-life experience and his mother, Margie, shares similar worries and urges him to broaden his horizons beyond college. It takes months before he can enroll in another class, leading Flynn to receive an invitation for an interview for a ‘prestigious position’ at the Metropolitan Public Library. He is hired and informed that this position has been in existence for thousands of years.
His responsibility is to safeguard ancient and sometimes enchanted artifacts kept in a concealed chamber far beneath the ‘real’ library, such as Pandora’s Box, Tesla’s Death Ray, the Holy Grail, and the transformed body of King Midas, among others. Flynn soon discovers that this task entails more than he initially realized when a group known as the Serpent Brotherhood steals one part of the Spear of Destiny. To Flynn’s surprise, their leader is none other than Wilde, a former librarian who had faked his own death. (This revelation is made known to the audience right away.) Judson informs Flynn that possessing all three pieces of the Spear would grant whoever holds it control over the entire world. As stated in the movie, even Hitler only had one piece of it.
