The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) is an American adventure comedy-drama directed by Wes Anderson and written by both Anderson and Noah Baumbach. While documenting his latest sea expedition, oceanographer Steve Zissou’s closest friend and lead diver, Esteban du Plantier, is consumed by a large, glowing spotted creature referred to as a ‘jaguar shark’ by Zissou. Determined to capture the shark’s demise for his next project, Zissou enlists the help of a diverse crew aboard his aging research vessel Belafonte. This includes his estranged wife Eleanor, Pelé dos Santos, a Brazilian guitarist and safety expert who performs David Bowie songs in Portuguese, and Klaus Daimler, the German first mate who sees both Zissou and Esteban as father figures.
Some of the minor crew members are Vikram Ray, a cameraman; Bobby Ogata, a frogman; Vladimir Wolodarsky, a physicist and soundtrack composer; Renzo Pietro, a sound man; and Anne-Marie Sakowitz, a script girl. Additionally, there is also a group of unpaid interns from the University of North Alaska. However, the ‘Team Zissou’ project has faced hardships as they have not released a successful documentary in nine years. It is during this time that Ned Plimpton, who has long admired Zissou and recently lost his mother, discovers that he may be Zissou’s son. After meeting at Zissou’s latest premiere, Ned takes time off from his job as an airline pilot in Kentucky to join the crew.
