The Little Drummer Girl (1984)
The American spy drama film, The Little Drummer Girl (1984), directed by George Roy Hill and adapted from John le Carré’s novel of the same name, takes place in Europe and the Middle East. It follows the Mossad’s covert mission to expose a PLO bomber known as Khalil. In order to eliminate Khalil, they initially abduct (and ultimately execute) his brother, who is delivering speeches in a ski mask about the suffering and losses of Palestine under military control. Charlie, an American actress in London with anti-Zionist views, is lured to Greece under false pretenses of filming a wine commercial. She falls for Joseph, who deceives her into believing he is the masked man she met in the UK.
After being taken to an Israeli Mossad-operated house (concealed as the commercial shoot location), she is recruited and persuaded that they also seek peace and an end to violence. After being closely watched and influenced, Charlie displays her competence and performs admirably in the Mossad’s storyline. She is eventually sent to a destroyed city where the leader of the Palestinian resistance, Tayeh, hesitantly sends her to a desert training camp for guerrilla warfare. Tayeh clarifies that their actions are against Zionism, not Semitism, and moves her on to her next task. As a double agent under Mossad’s guise, Charlie assumes the identity of the deceased man’s girlfriend and crosses paths with Khalil. Together, they rig an explosive briefcase with the correct wiring for its bomb signature.
