The Little Things (2021) is an American neo-noir psychological crime thriller film directed and written by John Lee Hancock, with Mark Johnson as co-producer. Set in 1990, a teenage girl is pursued on a highway by a motorist. She seeks refuge at an abandoned gas station and catches the attention of a passing truck driver, successfully escaping her pursuer. In Bakersfield, Deputy Sheriff Joe ‘Deke’ Deacon is sent to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to gather evidence for a recent homicide case. Accompanied by newly appointed lead detective Jimmy Baxter, Deacon notices similarities between the current murder and an old unsolved serial murder case. Later that night, a woman named Ronda Rathbun is followed while jogging and reported missing the next morning. Baxter learns from Captain Farris about Deacon’s troubled past involving divorce and health issues stemming from his obsession with the unsolved case.
Therefore, he is advised against further involvement, but Deacon still takes leave from his station to assist in solving Baxter’s case. That night, another body is found under a bridge by the police. The M.O. matches the previous murder and follows a pattern of sex workers being stabbed to death. Deacon sets his sights on a potential suspect, Albert Sparma, who works at a nearby repair store. After tailing him and facing obstacles, Deacon brings Sparma in for questioning. During the interrogation, Sparma provokes and taunts the detectives before being released due to an angry outburst from Deacon. In addition, the young woman who was pursued in the desert is interviewed but reveals that she had seen Sparma in handcuffs at the police station, jeopardizing her ability to provide objective identification as a suspect.
