Shade (2003)
Shade (2003), a film by Damian Nieman, is an American neo-noir crime thriller. In an underground mob poker game that gets robbed, a cheating man defends himself during a gunfight, leaving only him and one gangster alive. A Mexican standoff ensues. Hustlers Tiffany and Charlie Miller meet with poker player Larry Jennings while he’s winning a game. They form a partnership to work a game with a potential $20,000 profit. The third member of their team, Vernon, is introduced as a card mechanic and blackjack dealer. In a flashback, Vernon switches out the contents of the shoe while his accomplices win $40,000 from the casino. That night, as Charlie and Vernon wait for Larry, corrupt cop Scarne extorts them. When Larry arrives and witnesses Vernon’s skills in action, he agrees to join forces with them in the game – betting high on Vernon’s crooked deals.
At the match, Larry grows impatient with the sluggish pace and, during his own round, puts over $100,000 in the pot. Unfortunately, he loses and finds out that the money he wagered belongs to a mobster named Malini. To collect what is owed, Malini sends his cronies Marlo and Nate to retrieve Larry. After taking him to a house that has been completely stripped bare – a scheme involving everyone at the game – they then transport him to an airport where he meets his demise. In another scene, the man and the gangster (from earlier) agree to settle their dispute by cutting cards for the money. The gangster cuts a King while the man cuts an Ace of spades. As they both reach for their guns, it is the man who pulls his first and shoots and kills the gangster, resulting in blood splattering on top of the ace. It is later revealed that this tale is actually an urban legend about Dean ‘the Dean’ Stevens, a notorious card shark and player.
