The Lone Ranger (2013), an American Western action film directed by Gore Verbinski and written by Justin Haythe, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, follows the story of lawyer John Reid. In 1933 at a San Francisco funfair, young Will meets Comanche Tonto, who tells him about his encounters with the famous Lone Ranger. The film then flashes back to 1869, when Reid returns home to Colby, Texas on a train managed by railroad tycoon Latham Cole. Unbeknownst to Reid, the train also carries Tonto and outlaw Butch Cavendish, who is being transported for his hanging. After Cavendish’s gang rescues him and derails the train, Tonto is put in jail. To seek justice, Dan deputizes John as a Texas Ranger and gives him their late father’s silver star badge. Together with six others, they set out to capture the Cavendish gang.

Cavendish’s men ambush and kill their pursuers while their leader uses his dagger to slay Dan. Tonto, who has managed to escape from jail, comes across the deceased men and gives them a proper burial. Later, John is awakened by a white spirit horse, transforming him into a ‘spirit walker’. Tonto reveals that John cannot be killed in battle and also informs him that one of the Rangers, Collins, has turned against Dan and joined forces with Cavendish. To protect himself from enemies who believe he is dead, John wears a mask to conceal his identity. Tonto then presents John with silver bullets crafted from the fallen Rangers’ badges, instructing him to use them against Cavendish – whom he believes to be a wendigo (a mythical beast). While seeking information about Dan and Collins’ conflict over a cursed silver rock at a brothel called Hell on Wheels, Red Harrington reveals that Collins had recently visited there.
