The Long Good Friday (1980)
The American Western film, The Long Riders (1980), directed by Walter Hill, follows the James-Younger gang as they terrorize the Midwestern United States in the years following the Civil War. Led by Jesse James and Cole Younger, along with their brothers, the gang targets banks and trains. During a bank robbery, Ed Miller’s impatience leads to a shootout where Jesse is injured. As a result, Jesse dismisses Ed from the group while his brother Clell stays on. The Pinkerton detective Mr. Rixley is determined to capture the outlaws and ends up accidentally killing a Younger cousin and the youngest James brother, as well as losing several of his men. However, due to his mistakes, the Pinkertons back off from pursuing them. Jim Younger is dismayed to discover that Beth, a girl he was once interested in, is now engaged to Ed.
At Frank and Jesse’s younger brother’s funeral, he persuades Beth to leave Ed and they eventually get married. Clell Miller suggests the James-Younger Gang ride north in September 1876 to rob a bank owned by ‘squareheads’ in Northfield, Minnesota; however, word has spread about their presence and the town has been alerted by the Pinkertons. The robbery plan goes awry: the bank’s vault is on a timer and cannot be opened. Tragically, a cashier and another citizen are shot and killed. As they attempt to flee, they are met with gunfire from the townspeople. Two of the outlaws die, Clell is mortally wounded, Frank is injured in the arm, and all of the Youngers sustain severe injuries. The remaining gang members temporarily seek shelter in the woods. Jesse makes the decision to keep running, leaving his injured comrades to face their fate when a posse catches up to them.
