The American Western film, The Long Riders (1980), directed by Walter Hill, follows the James-Younger gang as they terrorize banks and trains in the years after the Civil War in the Midwestern United States. Led by Jesse James and Cole Younger, along with their brothers, this band of robbers wreaks havoc until a careless mistake during a bank robbery leads to a shootout where Jesse is injured. In response, Jesse kicks Ed Miller out of the gang while his brother Clell remains. Assigned to capture the outlaws is Mr. Rixley of the Pinkerton’s agency, who relentlessly pursues them but causes some unintended casualties. However, due to his mistakes, the Pinkertons eventually back off. Meanwhile, Jim Younger is disappointed to find that Beth, whom he was once interested in, is now engaged to Ed.

At their younger brother’s funeral, Frank manages to persuade Beth to leave Ed and they eventually get married. Following Clell Miller’s suggestion, the James-Younger Gang heads north in September 1876 to rob a bank owned by ‘squareheads’ in Northfield, Minnesota. However, the news about their planned heist has spread and the town has been warned by the Pinkertons. Despite this setback, they still attempt the holdup but encounter problems when they find out that the bank’s vault is on a timer and cannot be opened. In the chaos that ensues, a cashier and another citizen end up being shot and killed. As they try to escape, the gang comes under fire from the townspeople. This results in two of their members getting killed while Clell suffers a fatal gunshot wound and Frank gets injured in the arm along with all of the Youngers sustaining serious injuries.
