The Lookout (2007)
The American crime film, The Lookout (2007), marks the directorial debut of Scott Frank. While driving with his lights off at night, high school sports star Chris Pratt crashes into a stalled combine on the road. Tragically, two of his passengers do not survive while he and his girlfriend Kelly are able to live through the accident. However, Chris is left with lasting mental impairments, including anterograde amnesia and anger management issues. In an effort to cope with these challenges, Chris attends classes to learn new skills and keeps a small notebook as a tool for remembering daily tasks. Despite having only financial support from his wealthy family, Chris’s case manager pushes him to build a fulfilling life despite his injuries. Thankfully, he has emotional support from his blind roommate Lewis and regularly checks in with Ted, a Sheriff’s Deputy who has become his friend.
Desperate for more meaningful work than his night cleaning job at the local bank, Chris repeatedly asks Mr. Tuttle, the bank manager, for an opportunity to apply for a teller position but is consistently denied. Chris becomes the focus of a group who are plotting to rob the bank. Gary, their leader and former classmate of Chris’, harbors resentment towards him due to his wealth and popularity before his accident. He befriends Chris and enlists Luvlee Lemons to charm him. The gang mocks Chris for his limitations since the accident, causing tension with Lewis and Ted. On the night of the robbery, Chris initially agrees to their plan but later changes his mind. However, at gunpoint, he is forced to assist in emptying the vault. During this time, Ted unknowingly interrupts the crime while delivering doughnuts. The discovery prompts one of the robbers, Bone, to start firing shots.
