The Lorax (2012)
The Lorax (2012), an animated musical comedy, was created by Illumination Entertainment and released by Universal Pictures. Young Ted Wiggins resides in Thneedville, a city enclosed by walls where all plant life is artificial. His crush on Audrey prompts him to seek out a ‘real tree’ to impress her. His grandmother, Norma, shares the story of the Once-ler, who holds knowledge about the trees’ disappearance. Venturing beyond Thneedville, Ted is met with a barren and polluted outside world. He locates the Once-ler and after multiple visits, convinces him to recount the tale of the trees. On another trip away from town, Ted encounters Aloysius O’Hare, the greedy mayor of Thneedville whose company sells bottled oxygen. O’Hare sees trees and their oxygen as a threat to his business and pressures Ted to stay in town but he persists in visiting the Once-ler.
As a young inventor, the Once-ler found himself in a beautiful forest of Truffula trees. However, his actions of cutting down one tree led to a confrontation with the Lorax, who claimed to be the protector of the forest. In order to stay in the forest, the Once-ler agreed not to cut down any more trees. He instead used the Truffula fibers to create a versatile garment known as the ‘Thneed’, which was met with great success. The Once-ler responsibly harvested the Truffula tufts until his relatives convinced him to resume cutting down trees for profit. This decision went against his promise to the Lorax and ultimately resulted in deforestation and pollution. Sadly, after all the Truffula trees were gone, the Once-ler’s family left him behind, leaving him destitute.
