Tolkien’s third volume of the novel series, The Return of the King (1955), it follows the journey of Sméagol, a hobbit who becomes consumed by the power of the One Ring after murdering his cousin Déagol to obtain it. As he descends into corruption and takes on the name Gollum, centuries pass and a great war threatens Middle Earth. Led by Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and King Théoden reunite with Merry and Pippin at Isengard before returning to Edoras. There they celebrate their victory at Helm’s Deep while Pippin accidentally discovers Sauron’s plan to attack Minas Tirith through Saruman’s palantír. Acting quickly, Gandalf rushes to warn Gondor’s corrupt steward Denethor of the impending danger.
While accompanied by Pippin, who had pledged loyalty to Denethor due to his deceased heir Boromir’s brave actions in saving his life, Gandalf instructs him to light the beacons for aid from Rohan. Meanwhile, on their journey towards Mordor, Frodo unknowingly carries the Ring while Gollum acts as their guide with plans to betray them and take the Ring for himself. The trio witnesses the Witch-king of Angmar, leader of the nine Nazgûl, heading towards Gondor with a massive army of Orcs. Gollum hatches a scheme to blame Sam for stealing food supplies and being consumed by desire for the Ring. As Frodo becomes increasingly influenced by the power of the Ring, he falls for Gollum’s lies and commands Sam to return home. Eventually, Gollum deceives Frodo into entering Shelob’s lair.
