The upcoming TV show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022–2024) is an American fantasy series created for Amazon Prime Video by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel and its appendices, it is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Produced by Amazon Studios in collaboration with New Line Cinema and the Tolkien Estate, filming for the eight-episode first season took place in New Zealand from February 2020 to August 2021, where the original films were also shot. A diverse international cast was assembled for the series.

The series, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s history of Middle-earth, is set in the distant past before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It delves into a time of calm and encompasses key moments from Middle-earth’s Second Age, including the creation of the Rings of Power, the ascent of Sauron as the Dark Lord, the downfall of Númenor, and the ultimate alliance between Elves and Men. While these events span thousands of years in Tolkien’s original tales, they are condensed for the series.
