The Lost City of Z (2016)

In the American epic biographical adventure drama film The Lost City of Z (2016), written and directed by James Gray, we follow the story of Percy Fawcett. In Ireland in 1905, Fawcett is a young British officer taking part in a stag hunt for Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on an Irish baronial estate. Despite his skill as a horseman and marksman, he is ignored at the post-hunt celebration. The following year, Fawcett travels to London to meet with officials from the Royal Geographical Society (RGS). Due to tensions between Bolivia and Brazil over their shared border and its impact on the valuable rubber trade in the region, the British government has been asked to survey it. Fawcett accepts the task in order to restore his family’s reputation. During his journey by ship to Brazil, he meets Corporal Henry Costin, who possesses knowledge of the Amazon rainforest.
In the depths of the jungle, on a sprawling rubber plantation belonging to Portuguese nobleman Baron DE Gondoris, Fawcett and his companions come across Corporal Arthur Manley. The Corporal shares with them that the British government has warned against any further exploration. Nevertheless, Fawcett and a team of guides, including the Amazonian scout Tadjui, press on to complete their mission. Along the way, Tadjui regales Fawcett with tales of a dazzling city hidden in the jungle, made entirely of gold and inhabited by a thriving population. While Fawcett initially dismisses these stories as nonsense, he later stumbles upon evidence that supports Tadjui’s claims – fragments of advanced pottery and small stone statues. As an English military officer struggling to advance in his career due to his late father’s scandalous reputation, Fawcett eagerly accepts an invitation from the Royal Geographical Society to join an expedition as a surveyor in uncharted Amazonia.
