The Lucky One (2012), an American romantic drama film directed by Scott Hicks, hit theatres in April of that year. Based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel from 2008 of the same title, the film follows Logan Thibault, a US Marine serving in Iraq. During an ambush, Logan witnesses ‘Aces’, one of his fellow Marines, die while trying to save a comrade. The next day, he stumbles upon a photo of a young woman on the ground just before another attack takes place, killing many nearby. Unable to locate the owner of the photograph, he decides to keep it. One of his squad-mates refers to her as their ‘guardian angel’ moments before their Humvee explodes. After returning to Colorado and staying with his sister’s family who have been taking care of his dog Zeus, Logan struggles with PTSD and survivor guilt. Ultimately, he makes the decision to leave and sets out on a quest to find the woman in the photo.
As Logan and Zeus make their way to Louisiana, a lighthouse in the picture leads them to a local resident who reveals that the woman in the photo was once married to his friend, a deputy sheriff. Logan tracks down this woman, Beth Green, but struggles to explain his purpose. Assuming he is looking for work, Beth’s grandmother Ellie hires him. Despite initial annoyance at Logan’s presence, Beth warms up to him as she witnesses his composed nature, diligent work ethic, and mechanical skills. Noticing that Beth’s son Ben lacks a positive male role model since his uncle Drake passed away, Logan takes on a supportive role in his life. However, the town judge’s son and former husband of Beth, Deputy Keith Clayton, is immediately wary of Logan and treats him with unwarranted hostility due to their shared history as Marines.
