The Machinist (2004)
The psychological thriller film, The Machinist (2004), was directed by Brad Anderson and written by Scott Kosar. Its protagonist, Trevor Reznik, suffers from insomnia which has caused him to become severely underweight. His coworkers have shunned him due to his physical appearance and unusual behavior. However, things take a turn for the worse when he is involved in an accident at work that results in a coworker losing their arm. Despite being distracted by a coworker named Ivan who no one seems to know or have records of, Trevor is blamed for the accident. Seeking solace, he turns to Stevie, a kindhearted prostitute, and Maria, a sympathetic waitress at his regular diner. Throughout all this, Trevor is plagued by disturbing flashes of imagery and everyday objects take on sinister meanings.
As if things couldn’t get any stranger, mysterious post-it notes with hangman drawings begin appearing on his refrigerator. As he becomes increasingly paranoid, Trevor takes the opportunity to connect with Maria despite some unclear occurrences. While spending time at an amusement park, he joins her and her son Nicholas on a ride called “Route 666.” Initially a harmless thrill, the ride gradually displays more unsettling visuals that trigger a seizure in Nicholas. Struggling to make sense of it all, Trevor suspects a deliberate plot to drive him insane, especially after finding a photo of his coworker Reynolds fishing with Ivan in Ivan’s wallet while it is left unattended at a bar. A close call at work causes Trevor to lash out in anger towards his colleagues, leading to his immediate termination.
