The MacKintosh Man (1973)
The film The Mackintosh Man (1973), directed by John Huston and written by Walter Hill, is a Cold War espionage tale based on Desmond Bagley’s book The Freedom Trap. Joseph Rearden, a former criminal now working for British intelligence, meets with MI5 agent Mackintosh and his assistant Mrs. Smith in London. They reveal a plan for Rearden to steal diamonds being transported through the postal service to avoid detection. Rearden successfully executes the heist by attacking a postman and escaping with the diamonds. However, later that night, two detectives pay him a visit after receiving an anonymous tip about the robbery. Despite his attempt at playing an innocent Australian who just arrived in London, they are not convinced.
During his trial, the judge’s frustration grows as the stolen diamonds remain unrecovered from Rearden’s hiding place. Consequently, he sentences Rearden to a 20-year stint in HM Prison Chelmsford. There, Rearden gradually assimilates into the prison population and is assigned to laundry duties. Soon after his arrival, he meets Ronald Slade, a former intelligence officer who was exposed as a KGB mole and is now held in high security. Curious about Slade, Rearden discreetly asks his fellow inmates for information but finds that little is known about him. A few weeks later, a well-spoken prisoner offers to broker a deal with an organization that can free Rearden from prison in exchange for a significant portion of the stolen diamonds.
