The Maiden Heist (2009)
The Maiden Heist (2009) is an American crime comedy film directed by Peter Hewitt, following the story of Roger, a security guard at an art museum. His job involves constantly monitoring the precious artwork on display. One particular painting catches his eye – The Lonely Maiden, a beautiful woman gazing out into the distance with a sense of longing. Despite being happily married to Rose, Roger finds himself fixated on this painting. However, Rose is eager for Roger to retire so they can start their new life in Florida. One day, Roger receives news that The Lonely Maiden and several other pieces will be permanently relocated to a museum in Copenhagen, Denmark. This leaves Roger feeling dismayed as he can’t follow his beloved painting overseas. But upon meeting Charles, another guard who shares a similar attachment to a different artwork – a portrait of a woman surrounded by cats – Roger’s mood begins to shift.
George has a fixation on a particular piece of art – a nude Greek warrior sculpture. During his night shift, he frequently poses naked next to it. Taking advantage of their different shifts and skills, George devises a plan to steal their beloved works of art and replace them with replicas. Roger agrees to label the shipped artworks, while Charles and George enlist the help of others for replicating their favorites. As a painter, Charles is able to successfully recreate the cat painting, but struggles with capturing The Lonely Maiden accurately. To complete this task, the men hire a street artist and end up using Rose’s vacation savings to pay for it. This causes Rose to grow suspicious and almost leads to taking Roger off the volunteer team. Despite this setback, George is able to replicate ‘his’ sculpture and the Lonely Maiden replica is also finished.
