The American romantic drama film, The Majestic (2001), was produced and directed by Frank Darabont and written by Michael Sloane. Set in 1951 during the height of McCarthyism, the story follows Peter Appleton, a rising young Hollywood screenwriter. He is informed by his agent Leo Kubelsky and attorney Kevin Bannerman that he has been accused of being a communist due to attending an antiwar gathering in college. Despite claiming he only went to impress a girl, the accusation causes his latest film, Ashes to Ashes, to be delayed and credited to someone else. It also leads to his movie star girlfriend Sandra Sinclair leaving him and his contract with the studio being terminated. Feeling distraught, Peter takes a drive up the California coast and ends up driving off a bridge while trying to avoid hitting an opossum.

After awaking with amnesia, Peter finds himself on a beach by the ocean. He is soon discovered by Stan Keller, who brings him to Lawson, California. The local doctor, Doc Stanton, tends to Peter’s injuries while Sheriff Cecil Coleman is notified. Harry Trimble enters the picture and believes Peter is his long-lost son, Luke, who went missing in action during World War II. Upon hearing the news, Sheriff Coleman instructs Doc to break it gently to someone. Because of his memory loss, Peter accepts the town’s assumption that he is Luke and is welcomed by Mayor Ernie Cole and the rest of the community. As he becomes more acquainted with his new surroundings, Peter also forms a bond with Harry and Doc’s daughter Adele, who had been engaged to Luke almost ten years before he went off to war.
