The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)
The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) is an American action drama film that marked Randall Wallace’s directorial debut. Facing bankruptcy from King Louis XIV’s costly wars, the Kingdom of France is on the brink of revolution and its citizens are starving due to a lack of resources. In an effort to save money, the king orders for rotten food to be distributed among his people as he prepares for yet another battle. Meanwhile, the former Musketeers have gone their separate ways; Aramis has become a Jesuit priest, Porthos is a womanizing drunkard plagued by health issues, and Athos has retired to his farm. D’Artagnan remains in service as Captain of the king’s guard while Athos’ son, Raoul, dreams of becoming a Musketeer like his father. However, at a lavish palace festival, King Louis becomes infatuated with none other than Christine Bellefort – Raoul’s fiancée.
Immediately, he sends Raoul to the battlefront, where he meets his fate. Upon realizing that Louis was behind his son’s death, Athos denounces his loyalty to the king. After a failed assassination attempt on Louis by a disguised Jesuit, D’Artagnan is ordered by the king to find and eliminate their leader. In response, Aramis calls for a secret meeting with Porthos, Athos, and D’Artagnan, and reveals himself as the Jesuit leader who plans to overthrow Louis. While Athos and Porthos agree to join him, D’Artagnan declines. In turn, Athos condemns him as a traitor and warns of dire consequences should they cross paths again. Meanwhile, Christine falls prey to Louis’s seduction and begins to suspect his involvement in Raoul’s death.
