The drama film, The Man Who Cried (2000), written and directed by Sally Potter tells the story of Fegele Abramovich, a Russian Jew who becomes separated from her father in 1927. As her father seeks his fortune in America, he promises to bring Fegele and her grandmother to join him. Before departing, he sings ‘Je Crois Entendre Encore’ from Les pêcheurs de perles by Bizet to his daughter. Tragically, a pogrom strikes their village after he leaves, and Fegele is forced to flee with the help of kind neighbors. Despite facing numerous obstacles on her journey, she eventually boards a ship bound for Britain with only a photo of her father and a coin from her grandmother. Upon arrival, an English official rechristens her as ‘Susan’ and places her in foster care.
At school, British students tease her by calling her a ‘gypsy’, but Fegele does not yet understand their words due to the language barrier. Suzie’s teacher catches her singing ‘Je Crois Entendre Encore’ in Yiddish. With her help, Suzie learns to speak and sing in English. Eventually, Suzie auditions for a Parisian dance troupe and meets Lola (Cate Blanchett), an older Russian dancer with whom she becomes roommates and friends. At a fancy party, both women perform alongside Cesar, a mysterious Romani horseman who catches Suzie’s eye. As they listen to a tenor singing ‘Je Crois Entendre Encore’, Suzie and Lola realize it is Dante, an Italian opera singer who immediately captures Lola’s attention with his wealth and success.
