Volunteers (1985), directed by Nicholas Meyer and starring Tom Hanks and John Candy, follows the story of Lawrence Bourne III. Bourne is a spoiled recent graduate of Yale, Class of 1962, with a hefty $28,000 gambling debt. When his father, Lawrence Bourne Jr., refuses to pay off the debt, Bourne decides to switch places with his college roommate Kent in order to escape from his angry creditors. This leads him to join a Peace Corps flight headed for Thailand. On the plane, he meets Tom Tuttle from Washington State University and Beth Wexler who quickly realizes Bourne’s true intentions and rejects his advances. In Thailand, they are tasked by John Reynolds to build a bridge for the local villagers. However, on their first day, Tuttle gets into an argument with the villagers about which wood to use and it becomes clear that At Toon is the only one who speaks English among them.

Tuttle falls into the hands of communist troops who manipulate him into obeying their commands, while Reynolds attempts to seduce Beth. Lawrence forms a bond with At Toon and teaches him and other locals various card games, but they come across Chung Mee, a powerful drug kingpin who pressures them to finish constructing the bridge quickly. Eventually, Lawrence wins Beth’s heart, but she is captured by Reynolds, who is in cahoots with Chung Mee. They manage to rescue Beth, who urges them to destroy the bridge; reluctantly, Lawrence agrees after professing his love for her. Together with the villagers, they hatch a plan and bring Tuttle back to reality before strategizing to plant dynamite in the center of the bridge in order to bring it down entirely.
