The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Richard Condon’s 1959 novel, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), is a political thriller that tells the story of a prominent U.S. political family and their son’s involvement in a Communist conspiracy. The novel has been adapted into two feature films with the same title, released in 1962 and 2004 respectively. In the story, Major Bennett Marco and his infantry platoon are captured during the Korean War in 1952 by an elite Soviet commando unit. They are eventually brainwashed into believing that Sergeant Raymond Shaw saved their lives in combat, leading to him receiving the Medal of Honor. Years later, Marco, now working as an intelligence officer back in the United States, begins experiencing haunting nightmares about their time in captivity and being surrounded by a group of seemingly innocent old ladies involved in their brainwashing.
One of the ladies urges Sergeant Shaw to kill two members of his platoon. The scene switches between the old ladies and Chinese/Soviet intelligence officials. After learning that another soldier in his platoon has the same recurring nightmare, Marco investigates the cause. While looking into Shaw’s background, Major Marco recognizes Shaw’s new manservant from their time in Korea. A physical altercation ensues between Marco and the manservant at Shaw’s house, resulting in significant injuries for both men. Upon seeing his former major arrested, Shaw realizes their past friendship and they reconnect. As events unfold, both men find love interests: Rose Cheyney for Marco on a train and Jocelyn Jordan for Raymond, who happens to be the daughter of Senator Thomas Jordan and a neighbor of Shaw’s.
