The Mandalorian (2019–2024), a space Western series created by Jon Favreau for Disney+, is the first live-action show in the Star Wars franchise, set five years after Return of the Jedi (1983). Starring Pedro Pascal as the title character, a lone bounty hunter who protects Grogu, a Force-sensitive child, from Moff Gideon and his remaining Imperial forces. George Lucas had previously planned for a live-action Star Wars series in 2009, but it was deemed too costly. When he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in October 2012, development for a new series began on Disney+. In March 2018, Favreau joined as writer and showrunner. The series has received positive reviews for its performances (especially Pascal’s), visual effects, cinematography, direction, action scenes, emotional impact, music score, and the chemistry between the two leads. At the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, the first season was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and won seven Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
Set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and the fall of the Galactic Empire, The Mandalorian centers on Din Djarin, a solitary bounty hunter from Mandalore operating in the far corners of the galaxy. He is enlisted by remaining Imperial forces to retrieve a young child named Grogu, but instead goes on the run to safeguard the vulnerable infant. On their quest to find Grogu’s people, they are relentlessly pursued by Moff Gideon, who seeks to exploit Grogu’s connection to the Force. The pair subsequently journeys to Mandalore as Din Djarin strives to atone for violating his creed by removing his helmet.
