The American science fiction thriller film, The Manhattan Project (1986), follows the story of Dr. John Mathewson who makes a groundbreaking discovery in refining plutonium to high levels of purity. As a result, he is given a laboratory in Ithaca, New York by the US government under the guise of a medical company. Upon his move to Ithaca, John meets real estate agent Elizabeth Stephens and attempts to charm her by inviting her son Paul for a lab tour. However, Paul, a gifted student with a love for science, quickly becomes suspicious when he stumbles upon an impossible patch of five-leaf clover on the premises. Despite John’s confidence in the cover story for his lab, Paul’s suspicions are aroused. Paul and his girlfriend, Jenny Anderman, an aspiring journalist, team up to expose a weapons factory to the media.

To provide solid evidence, they decide to steal a container of plutonium. However, Paul realizes that just having the plutonium will not impress anyone, labeling them as mere “kids” who took something from a lab. So, he suggests a daring plan to Jenny – he will build the world’s first privately-made nuclear device and enter it into the New York Science Fair, publicly revealing the lab’s secrets. To cover up his real intentions, Paul convinces his mother and school that his project is about breeding hamsters in total darkness. With their support secured, he begins working on constructing the bomb. Unfortunately, during this process, it is discovered that the stolen plutonium has been swapped with a bottle of glittery shampoo. Upon investigation by Lt. Colonel Conroy and his team, it is determined that Paul is responsible for the theft of plutonium from the factory.
