The science fiction film, The Martian (2015) was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Matt Damon. It was adapted from Andy Weir’s 2011 novel of the same name by Drew Goddard. In the year 2035, the Ares III mission to Mars was exploring Acidalia Planitia on sol 18 of their 31-sol expedition. However, a severe dust storm threatened to topple their Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV). During the evacuation, astronaut Mark Watney was hit by debris and presumed dead. With the MAV in danger of falling, the rest of the crew took off for their orbiting vessel, leaving Watney behind. After waking up from the storm, Watney found himself injured with a low-oxygen warning. He then returned to the crew’s surface habitat (‘Hab’) and tended to his wound. While recovering, he started documenting his experience through a video diary.
With no way to contact Earth, Watney’s hope for rescue lies in the upcoming Ares IV mission. The spacecraft is set to arrive at the Schiaparelli crater in four years, where a MAV has already been deployed. In the meantime, Watney’s top priority is ensuring he has enough food. Being a botanist, he uses Martian soil and leftover rocket fuel to create a garden inside the Hab, growing potatoes saved for a special Thanksgiving meal. He also begins modifying a rover for his journey to the Ares IV MAV. Meanwhile, back on Earth, NASA satellite planner Mindy Park detects movement in satellite images and realizes that Watney is still alive. Excited by this news, NASA director Teddy Sanders shares it with the public but keeps it from the Ares III crew who are headed back to Earth – much to flight director Mitch Henderson’s dismay.
