The Matrix Resurrections (2021), an American sci-fi action film, marks Lana Wachowski’s solo directorial debut in the franchise, without her sister Lilly. Bugs, a young woman, discovers that the Matrix is stuck in a loop of old code. She sets out to free Morpheus from the simulation with the help of a program that embodies him. The creator of the video game series The Matrix, Thomas Anderson, based it on his hazy memories as Neo. He frequently meets Tiffany (a character inspired by his past encounters with Trinity) at a coffee shop. To develop game characters, Anderson uses a simulation called Modal. However, he struggles to distinguish between reality and dreams – a concern shared by his colleagues and partner. In an attempt to suppress these occurrences, Thomas takes blue pills prescribed by his psychoanalyst, but eventually stops taking them.
As Bugs and Morpheus work together to free Neo from the Matrix, Anderson’s partner regains his memories as Agent Smith, Neo’s previous adversary. Upon Neo’s awakening in a pod, he notices Trinity nearby, also imprisoned. The group then transports Neo to Bugs’s hovercraft, Mnemosyne. He is then taken to Io, a human city where he is reunited with an elderly Niobe. She informs him that it has been 60 years since the Machine War ended and explains that many of Neo’s allies, including the original Morpheus, have passed away during this time. Although Neo’s sacrifice brought peace for several years, the significant number of humans leaving the Matrix caused a severe power shortage. This resulted in the machines fighting over limited resources.
