The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)
The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009) is a satirical black comedy war film directed by Grant Heslov and adapted by Peter Straughan. It begins with U.S. Army General Dean Hopgood’s failed attempt to use paranormal abilities to pass through a solid wall. Ann Arbor Daily Telegram reporter Bob Wilton is left by his wife for the editor, leading him to fly to Kuwait to cover the Iraq War. There, he crosses paths with retired U.S. Army Special Forces operator Lyn Cassady, who shares that he was part of a unit training psychic spies in skills such as invisibility and remote viewing. Among the characters is Army officer Bill Django, who experienced an eye-opening moment during the Vietnam War when his men were unable or unwilling to shoot a female Viet Cong soldier before he was shot himself.
This inspired him to embark on a fact-finding mission after receiving a vision from the same soldier stating ‘their gentleness is their strength’. After being fully immersed in the New Age movement, Django returned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 1980. Sporting a long braid and a tattoo of an All-seeing Eye atop a pyramid on his chest, he caught the attention of General Hopgood who easily bought into his beliefs. Under Hopgood’s guidance, Django trained a group known as the New Earth Army with his top students being Lyn Cassady and Larry Hooper. However, their differing views caused tension between them. While Lyn focused on the positive aspects of the teachings like peaceful conflict resolution, Larry was more interested in its military applications.
