The Mentalist (2008 — 2015)
The popular American drama television series, The Mentalist (2008–2015), aired on CBS from September 2008 to February 2015, with a total of 151 episodes over seven seasons. It was created and executive produced by Bruno Heller and centers around the character Patrick Jane, an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Sacramento. Despite not being a law enforcement official, Jane utilizes his skills as a former fraudulent psychic medium to assist the CBI team in solving murders. His true motive for working with law enforcement is to seek revenge against Red John, the serial killer responsible for the brutal deaths of his wife, Angela Ruskin Jane, and daughter, Charlotte Anne Jane. Before these tragic events occurred, Jane had built a successful career as a con man posing as a psychic medium and even gained celebrity status. However, five years prior to the show’s pilot episode, his involvement in helping the police catch Red John led to personal tragedy when the killer took revenge by murdering his family.
Jane left his career behind and joined forces with the CBI, utilizing his talents to assist in solving a range of cases. His primary focus lies on those involving either Red John or copycats of the notorious killer. Despite often stating that he is not a psychic, Jane possesses remarkable skills in cold reading, hypnosis, pickpocketing, as well as an uncanny ability to read people and their motives. He works alongside colleagues Wayne Rigsby, Grace Van Pelt, and Kimball Cho at the CBI, led by their boss Teresa Lisbon. Jane’s relationship with Lisbon is marked by playful banter and hints of romantic tension that develop over time. The show introduces various recurring characters including Bret Stiles, Gale Bertram, Virgil Minnelli, Erica Flynn, Lorelei Martin, Kristina Frye, Madeleine Hightower, JJ Laroche and Walter Mashburn. As the show continues, its focus evolves from general cases in seasons one to three, to solely pursuing Red John in seasons four to six. By the midpoint of season six, Red John’s identity is revealed, prompting the FBI to take over and leading to the closure of the CBI. This shift brings in new characters and sets the show on a different path for two seasons, while still maintaining its emotional episodes and emphasis on solving cases.
