The Merry Gentleman (2008)
The neo-noir film, The Merry Gentleman (2008), directed by Michael Keaton, tells the story of Kate. She escapes her abusive husband, a police officer, and moves to Chicago. Despite befriending a colleague at work, she mostly keeps to herself due to her shame over the black eye from her husband’s latest attack. Feeling isolated and rejected, she encounters mainly unsavory characters. One night, while standing in an office window, Frank Logan, a professional hit man on a nearby rooftop preparing for a hit, sees her through his rifle scope. Instead of leaving after the job is done, he takes off his hat and steps out onto the ledge as if about to jump. Startled by Kate’s cry as she steps onto the snowy sidewalk below him, Frank falls backward onto the roof behind him.
In an effort to add some happiness to her life, she decides to purchase a Christmas tree. Later that evening, she comes across Frank in her apartment building. Initially, she doesn’t recognize him as the man from the rooftop, but he kindly assists her in carrying the large tree to her place. He later pays her another visit, but unfortunately falls ill with pneumonia before he can share his reason for being there. Kate quickly rushes him to the hospital and despite their uncomfortable conversation, they form a friendship that may lead to something more. After his recovery, she makes a passing comment about his worn hat and ponders all the experiences it has witnessed- unknowingly alluding to Frank’s past as a murderer. Meanwhile, Murcheson, the detective investigating Frank’s recent killing, also takes an interest in Kate romantically.
