The Messenger (2009) is a war drama film, marking the directorial debut of Oren Moverman, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alessandro Camon. After returning from fighting in the Iraq War, U.S. Army staff sergeant Will Montgomery discovers that his girlfriend Kelly is now engaged to someone else. Before his discharge, he is assigned the role of casualty notification officer, under the guidance of Gulf War veteran Captain Tony Stone. Their superior, Lieutenant Colonel Dorsett, emphasizes the importance of this task as many have failed in the past. Captain Stone then briefs Will on the protocols for delivering tragic news to loved ones. On their first assignment, they encounter a mother who slaps Stone in grief while Will witnesses Dale Martin’s angry reaction; another woman breaks down in her father’s arms upon learning of her husband’s death; a Mexican man mourns his daughter through a translator; and Olivia seems strangely unaffected by her husband’s death, leading Stone to suspect infidelity was involved.

At a bar, Will and Stone share stories about their lives. Will opens up about his girlfriend’s rejection and the devastating loss of his father to a drunk driving accident. He also mentions his strained relationship with his mother. Later, while at a mall, Will spots Olivia with her young son as they shop for clothes for her husband’s funeral. He then intervenes in an altercation between her and two Army recruiters who are trying to enlist underage individuals. After offering Olivia a ride, he repairs her car and strikes up a friendship with both her and Matt. However, upon receiving a voicemail from Kelly regarding her wedding plans, Will becomes enraged and punches a hole in his wall, injuring his hand even further.
