The Mexican (2001)

The Mexican (2001), an American dark comedy adventure crime film by Gore Verbinski, takes place in Los Angeles. You hear a car accident off-screen as a traffic light turns red. Five years pass and Jerry Welbach has been paying off his debt to Arnold Margolese, a mob boss now behind bars. But when Jerry messes up his last task, Bernie Nayman, Margolese’s right-hand man, assigns him a new final mission: retrieve an antique pistol named ‘the Mexican’ from a man called Beck in Mexico. This job pushes Jerry’s girlfriend Sam over the edge and she leaves for Las Vegas. Upon arriving in Mexico, Jerry finds the legendary gun with Beck, who informs him that he is actually Margolese’s grandson. Tragically, Beck is shot and killed by a stray bullet while celebrating. Panicked, Jerry calls his coworker Ted and discovers that the stolen car containing Beck’s body and the pistol belonged to Margolese.
Without hesitation, Jerry retrieves both items by shooting one of the thieves in the foot and burying Beck’s body before returning to California. While on her way to Las Vegas, Sam is targeted by a well-dressed hitman, but his attempt to abduct her is foiled when another hitman intervenes and takes her captive. This second hitman goes by the name of Leroy, and he reveals that he was hired to hold Sam hostage until Jerry delivers a pistol. Sam discloses to Leroy that Jerry owes a debt to Margolese for an incident that occurred five years ago – when he crashed into Margolese’s car while running a red light. This event was seen at the beginning of the film. It was later discovered by police that someone was tied up in Margolese’s trunk, whom he had planned to kill.
