The Mighty Quinn (1989)
The American mystery comedy thriller film, The Mighty Quinn (1989), features Denzel Washington as the titular character. Quinn is the chief of police for a small US territory in the Caribbean. When Donald Pater, the millionaire owner of a luxury resort hotel, is murdered, Quinn’s best friend Maubee becomes the prime suspect. Despite this assumption, Quinn remains doubtful and clashes with Governor Chalk and his cocky political advisor Thomas Elgin. The murder case adds to Quinn’s personal struggles; he is estranged from his wife Lola and has little time for his son. Maubee continuously evades arrest by the police.
During questioning, a witness mentions that Maubee had a rare $10,000 United States bill. In an attempt to locate him, Quinn speaks with Ubu Pearl, the local witch and Isola’s aunt, who is also Maubee’s girlfriend. Chalk introduces Quinn to Fred Miller, an amiable American who supposedly represents Pater’s company. Quinn arrests Jose Patina, who claims to be on vacation but has been inquiring about Maubee’s whereabouts. After being bailed out of jail, Patina meets with Miller at a rundown hotel. Miller informs him that the “operation” is finished and proceeds to murder Patina. Later, Miller visits Ubu Pearl and demands to know Maubee’s location. When she refuses, he sets fire to her home while she is still inside.
