The Missing (2003)
Directed by Ron Howard, The Missing (2003) is a gritty American Western. Starring Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett, the film is adapted from Thomas Eidson’s novel The Last Ride, published in 1996. Set in late 19th-century New Mexico, the story follows Samuel Jones as he seeks to reconcile with his daughter Magdalena ‘Maggie’ Gilkeson, after leaving her and her mother many years ago. However, Maggie refuses to forgive him for causing her mother’s death and sends him away the next morning. Meanwhile, a group of renegade Apache led by Pesh-Chidin (also known as El Brujo) attack the area, killing settlers and taking young women and girls for sex trafficking in Mexico. Among those abducted is Maggie’s eldest daughter Lilly, while her rancher boyfriend Brake Baldwin was among the victims killed.
After securing her father’s release from jail, Maggie and her family set out to rescue the abducted girls. Despite being short-handed, the sheriff is reluctant to offer any assistance. On their journey, they come across a group of U.S. Cavalry soldiers who had also been attacked by El Brujo. In an unfounded suspicion, the soldiers accuse Jones of being involved in the raid, but Maggie quickly resolves the situation. However, due to prior obligations, the lieutenant in charge is unable to provide aid as he leads his unit in relocating captive Native Americans. Thus, it falls upon Maggie, her father, and younger daughter Dot to take on the daunting task of tracking down El Brujo and his warriors.
