The Mission (1986)
The Mission (1986) is a British historical drama directed by Roland Joffé and written by Robert Bolt. It follows the journey of Jesuit priest Father Gabriel as he travels to the eastern Paraguayan jungle in the 1750s to convert the native Guaraní people to Christianity. While attempting to make contact with them, another priest is tragically thrown off Iguazu Falls. Father Gabriel then ventures to the falls himself, playing his oboe in hopes of reaching out to the Guaraní. However, one of the natives breaks his instrument in half. Despite this, Father Gabriel remains composed and is eventually taken to their village, where they are captivated by his music. Meanwhile, mercenary and slave trader Rodrigo Mendoza is staying with the Spanish governor, Don Cabeza, alongside his fiancée Carlotta.
When Mendoza discovers Carlotta’s affair with his half-brother Felipe, he challenges him to a duel and ultimately kills him, leaving Mendoza consumed with guilt. Father Gabriel, a friend of the governor’s, challenges Mendoza to undergo penance and join the Jesuit mission. Reluctantly, Mendoza reluctantly accompanies the Jesuits to their sanctuary, carrying his armor and sword along the way. The natives at first recognize him as their persecutor, but are eventually moved by his tears and forgive him. Father Gabriel’s mission is portrayed as a safe haven and center of education for the Guaraní people. Deeply touched by their acceptance, Mendoza feels compelled to aid them and is given a Bible by Father Gabriel.
