The Mist (2007) is an American science-fiction horror film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1980 novella. A severe thunderstorm hits Bridgton, Maine, causing a tree to crash into the lakeside home of artist David Drayton, his wife Stephanie and their eight-year-old son Billy. The next morning, as they assess the damage, they spot a thick mist rolling over the lake. To prepare for potential power outages, David and Billy head to town with their neighbor Brent Norton to purchase supplies. While inside the supermarket, they witness police cars speeding through the streets. A terrified local named Dan Miller rushes into the store, warning them of danger lurking in the mist. As a civil alert siren blares, managers Ollie Weeks and Bud Brown shut down the supermarket and the mist engulfs it. One woman decides to leave and return home to her children.
Despite David’s advice, Norm ventures into the mist to fix the emergency generator. However, he is suddenly snatched by a tentacled creature, leaving David and Ollie to guide customers in barricading the store windows. Meanwhile, Mrs. Carmody begins preaching about the end of the world, causing Brent to dismiss her warnings and leave with a group for outside help – only to never return. In another attempt at survival, a man rushes to retrieve a shotgun from a truck but meets his demise by an unseen force. As tension rises among those trapped in the store, David finds allies in Amanda Dunfrey and Irene Reppler, two teachers who had clashed with Carmody’s extremist views on the disaster at hand. Knowing that they need protection, Amanda hands her revolver over to Ollie, a former shooting champion in their area.
