The Money Pit (1986)
The Money Pit (1986) is an American comedy film directed by Richard Benjamin and starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. It follows the story of Walter Fielding, an attorney, and his girlfriend Anna Crowley as they attempt to renovate their newly purchased house. The film is a remake of the 1948 Cary Grant comedy, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. Walter’s father, also named Walter, has married a woman named Florinda and fled the country after stealing millions from their musician clients. The couple finds themselves in a tight spot when they are asked to leave their sublet apartment by Anna’s ex-husband, Max Beissart, who has returned from Europe earlier than expected. With the help of a shady real estate agent, Walter discovers a million-dollar mansion on sale for only $200,000 due to its distressed condition.
They meet the owner Estelle, whose husband Carlos has been arrested and is in need of quick cash. Her emotional story and insistence on keeping the house lit only by candlelight to save money for lawyers captures Anna’s attention and influences Walter’s decision to purchase it. However, upon taking ownership, the house quickly begins to deteriorate. The front door frame dislodges, the staircase collapses, and a fire breaks out due to faulty wiring. Art and Brad Shirk are hired with Walter’s initial payment of $5,000 to demolish the house, requiring Walter and Anna to navigate through bureaucratic red tape in order to obtain necessary building permits for the reconstruction.
