The Monuments Men (2014)
The war film, The Monuments Men (2014), was both directed and written by George Clooney with Grant Heslov as producer. As the Allies made progress pushing back the Axis powers in Italy in 1943, Frank Stokes convinced President Roosevelt that preserving the artistic treasures of Western civilization was crucial. In response, Stokes was tasked with assembling a specialized Army unit, known as the ‘Monuments Men’, consisting of museum directors, curators, art historians, and an architect. Their mission was two-fold: to advise Allied units and recover stolen art for its rightful owners. However, in occupied France in July 1944, curator Claire Simone is forced to aid Nazi officer Viktor Stahl in stealing art for either Adolf Hitler’s Führermuseum or other high-ranking officials like Hermann Göring.
As the Allies approach Paris, all hope seems lost for her gallery’s contents when she learns that Stahl is taking them to Germany. Without hesitation, she rushes to the railyard to confront him, but can only stand by helplessly as he departs on the train with the stolen goods. Meanwhile, Stokes’ unit faces obstacles from skeptical Allied officers who prioritize their troops over his mission. In order to cover more ground, the unit splits up with varying levels of success. While James Granger crosses paths with Simone, she remains guarded and uncooperative, suspecting their intentions are to claim the stolen art for themselves. And in a daring move, British officer Donald Jeffries risks his life by sneaking into occupied Bruges at night to rescue Michelangelo’s Madonna of Bruges – a valiant effort that ultimately costs him his life.
