The Mountain Between Us (2017)
The American survival drama film, The Mountain Between Us (2017), was directed by Hany Abu-Assad and written by Chris Weitz and J. Mills Goodloe, adapted from the 2011 novel of the same name by Charles Martin. After a storm cancels their flight, neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Bass and photojournalist Alex Martin hire pilot Walter to take them to Denver for connecting flights – Alex’s for her wedding in New York and Ben’s for emergency surgery in Baltimore. Unfortunately, Walter suffers a fatal stroke mid-flight, causing the plane to crash on a remote mountaintop in the High Uintas Wilderness. Despite various injuries, Ben, Alex, and Walter’s dog survive the crash and must now struggle to survive in the harsh winter conditions. This is how Alex Martin and Ben Bass cross paths – completely by chance – as they were both booked on the same Boise to Denver flight which ended up being canceled due to inclement weather with no other options until the following day.
The sudden cancellation poses a problem for both Alex and Ben. Alex is headed to New York City for her wedding early the next morning, while Ben needs to be in Baltimore, his home base, for a delicate surgery also scheduled for the next morning. After hearing about Ben’s predicament, Alex comes up with the idea of chartering a plane to Denver. Luckily, they manage to find a willing pilot named Walter who believes they can outrun the storm. Unfortunately, while in flight, Walter suffers a medical emergency which ultimately leads to the plane crashing into the snow-covered mountains above the treeline. Tragically, Walter does not survive but Ben and Alex are left with minor and serious injuries respectively. They are not alone though as Walter’s loyal golden lab also survives the crash.
