The Mule (2013)
The Mule (2013), an adaptation of Juan Eslava Galán’s novel, features Mario Casas and María Valverde alongside Secun de la Rosa. However, the production was marred by a well-known legal dispute over finances during the final days of shooting in October 2009. The clash involved British director Michael Radford and Spanish producer Alejandra Frade. Eventually, a theatrical version was released in 2013 without Radford’s involvement. Originally intended as an international co-production between Madrid’s Gheko Films, Andalusia’s Gheko Films Sur, Britain’s Workhorse Entertainment, and Ireland’s Subotica Entertainment, the film was mainly shot under Radford’s direction in 2009 with Sebastián Grousset taking over for the final days of filming.
In Spain during the late thirties, the civil war is gradually nearing its end, but there are still some regions in turmoil. Amidst the ongoing conflict, nuns do their best to assist the wounded being brought in from the battlefield. In this turbulent time, a young boy named Juan Castro joins a small group of soldiers as they travel through the countryside. Along the way, Juan comes across a white mule and realizes its potential value for post-war recovery in devastated villages where people struggle to survive. Wanting to spare the mule from certain death, Juan brings it with him on his journey despite occasional gunfights in otherwise peaceful fields. It is during this journey that Juan encounters Concha, a woman of admirable beauty who holds a strong distrust towards soldiers. But Juan is determined to win her heart no matter what it takes.
