The Mummy (1959)
The British horror film The Mummy (1959) was directed by Terence Fisher and starred Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. In Egypt, three archaeologists – John Banning, his father Stephen, and his uncle Joseph Whemple – were in search of Princess Ananka’s tomb. However, due to a broken leg, John couldn’t join them when they opened the tomb. An Egyptian named Mehemet Bey warned them against entering, fearing the curse that awaited desecrators. Despite the warning, Stephen and Joseph proceeded and discovered Ananka’s sarcophagus. Excitedly, Joseph left to share the news with John while Stephen found and read from the Scroll of Life.
Shortly after, the team heard Stephen’s screams and rushed into the tomb to find him in a catatonic state. In England, three years later, Stephen Banning emerges from his catatonic state at the Engerfield Nursing Home for the Mentally Disordered. He sends for his son and reveals that reading from the Scroll of Life unexpectedly revived Kharis, the mummified high priest of Karnak. Kharis was originally entombed alive as punishment for trying to bring Princess Ananka back to life after her death, as he secretly loved her. Stephen now claims that Kharis will seek revenge on anyone who disturbed Ananka’s tomb.
