The Neon Demon (2016)
The Neon Demon (2016) is a psychological horror film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. It opens with Jesse, a beautiful blond teenage girl posing on a love seat for amateur photographer Dean, whom she met online. The shoot offers Dean an opportunity to practice his craft, while also providing Jesse with headshots. Afterward, struggling to remove fake blood makeup, Jesse is approached by makeup artist Ruby who offers assistance. During their conversation, Ruby discovers that Jesse is new in town and this is her first photo shoot. She reveals she is staying at a rundown motel in Pasadena and later invites her to a party. At the party, Jesse meets two Australian-accented models, Sarah and Gigi.
While Gigi boasts about her plastic surgery, Sarah emphasizes the importance of one’s sexual partners in this town. Despite facing hostility from the veteran models, Jesse enjoys herself by watching a naked model fly over a stage and float under a mysterious blue upside-down triangle amidst flashing strobe lights. The next day, Jesse has an interview at a prestigious modeling agency. Her interviewer, Roberta Hoffman, showers her with compliments on her appearance and predicts great success for her. When Jesse reveals she is only 16 years old, Roberta quickly solves this issue by providing a parental consent form and instructing Jesse to claim she is 19 instead of 18 because it sounds more appealing. This results in two other models being fired while Roberta retrieves the form.
