The New Batman Adventures (1997–1999) is an American animated superhero TV series based on DC Comics’ Batman, which aired on Kids’ WB from September 13, 1997 to January 16, 1999. Created by Warner Bros. Animation, it serves as a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995) and the third installment in the DC Animated Universe. It was succeeded by Batman Beyond (1999-2001). The show underwent a revamp, featuring a new streamlined art style to ensure consistent animation and maintain consistency with Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000). This also resulted in changes to Batman’s appearance – he now appears sleeker and more muscular, with a darker costume that lacks the yellow ellipse surrounding his bat emblem and the blue highlights on his cape and cowl. His utility belt has also been updated, now featuring pouches instead of capsules and being light brown instead of yellow – similar to his look in Batman: Year One.

In the updated series, Bruce Wayne sported a different look, with his hair slicked back to accentuate his face, and blue eyes replacing his previous black ones. Additionally, he traded in his brown business suit for a sleek black one. As for Batman’s voice, Kevin Conroy adopted a more serious tone that was less distinguishable from his portrayal of Bruce in the original series. The writers intentionally gave Batman brief and somber dialogue to contrast him with the rest of the jovial characters. This also emphasized his transformation from the previous series. Batgirl’s outfit was revamped to resemble her debut appearance in Detective Comics #359 and the Silver Age of comics – sporting a black bodysuit, yellow gloves and boots – while retaining her signature blue cape and cowl, yellow bat-symbol, and utility belt. Commissioner Gordon’s appearance was also altered, with a leaner physique and a flat-top hairstyle. According to producer Paul Dini, Batgirl would be featured in every episode of the new series as Kenner wanted to release action figures and capitalize on her appearance in Batman & Robin.
