The New Daughter (2009) is an American horror film and the first feature directed by Spanish screenwriter Luis Berdejo. Recently divorced novelist John James moves to an old house in rural South Carolina with his teenage daughter, Louisa, and young son, Sam. Their relationship is strained as Louisa accuses him of never loving her mother and ruining everything. On their first night in the house, strange noises outside Louisa’s bedroom window catch her attention. Unseen by her, a humanoid creature lurks on the roof. The next day while exploring the fields and forest nearby, they stumble upon a large mound. While Louisa is drawn to it, Sam is hesitant to approach. Meanwhile, John discovers that a woman who lived in their house has mysteriously disappeared and returns home to find Louisa’s cat mutilated near the house.

After school, Louisa heads back to the mound and settles in the sunshine. While basking in the warmth, she suddenly hears unusual noises, almost resembling animal growls. Quickly, the film jumps to John who is washing dishes but accidentally cuts his hand. Later that evening, as John is investigating a path of muddy footprints leading from the front door to the bathroom, he discovers Louisa locked inside the tub with a shower running, washing away her extremely muddied body. The water gradually turns red as it drains away, revealing traces of blood. In the dead of night, John catches Louisa sleepwalking and guides her back to bed only to stumble upon a strange straw doll containing a live spider inside a dark ball. The next morning, Louisa surprises John by coming downstairs in a short black dress and make-up. When he asks about the mysterious doll, Louisa claims ignorance.
